Mac’s Convenience Stores Support Fort McMurray

10 May, 2016, Calgary, Canada

The wildfires in Alberta that began on May 1st, 2016, have forced the evacuation of thousands of people, and destroyed more than 1,600 homes and buildings in the city of Fort McMurray. With five locations, Mac’s Convenience Stores is very much a part of this community. Due to the evacuation and state of emergency, all five Mac’s stores in Fort McMurray have been closed since May 2nd.“First and foremost, our hearts go out to the families, friends, colleagues and customers in the Fort McMurray area,” says Bonnie Birollo, Mac’s Western Canada Vice President Operations in a statement issued days after the fires started. “Thankfully all of our store dealers & their staff members are safe. As an organization Mac’s is committed to doing what we can to support those affected by the fires. We also want to acknowledge the courage and endurance of this community during such a difficult time.”

Effective Saturday, May 7th, with every purchase made at a local Mac’s Convenience Store location across Canada, customers can choose to make a $2 donation. One hundred percent of all proceeds collected will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Fires Appeal to support the needs of the displaced citizens of Fort McMurray and surrounding areas.

In only four days, over $13,000 has been raised by our generous and loyal Mac’s Western Canada customers. The fundraising efforts have now also been initiated in our Mac’s Ontario Division, as well as in our Couche-Tard & Circle K Divisions within Quebec and the Maritime provinces.

On Monday, May 9th, 2016 an official CIBC Mac’s Convenience Stores company bank account was established in Canada to accept donations. Canadian residents can make donations in person at any CIBC branch, via wire transfer or via e-mail “interact” transfer to: (password: fire) using the following account details: Account name: Mac’s Convenience Stores Inc. (Fort McMurray Fire Relief Fund)

Mac’s Convenience Stores, Western Canada, has made a donation of CAD$50,000 in support of the victims of the fire and now Mac’s parent company, Alimentation Couche-Tard has announced that it will match all customer donations up to CAD$150,000.

Additionally, Founder and Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of Couche-Tard Alain Bouchard and his wife Sandra are making a CAD$300,000 donation from their private foundation.

“I’m very proud of our Mac’s store network and the Couche-Tard organization for being so willing to support Western Canadians during this time of crisis,” comments Ms. Birollo.

These and all additional funds received by the Northern Alberta Fire Support Fund will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross Alberta Fires Appeal to help directly address the needs of those affected by the wild fires.

At this time all five Mac’s locations are reported to be intact, and will re-open just as soon as the state of emergency is lifted and it is safe to do so.
